KETONE SALTS EXPLAINED
Ketone salts AKA Keto//OS were developed and tested at the University of South Florida in the labs of Dr.Dominic D’Agostino and have just become widely available in 2016 through network marketing by Pruvit.
Ketone salts (Keto//OS) are carefully formulated and contain the actual ketone betahydroxybutyrate bound to sodium, calcium and magnesium and can increase ketone levels much higher than coconut or MCT oil and could bring about even more improvement. Using ketone salts could be part of the overall strategy to raise ketones, keeping coconut and MCT oil as the foundation.
Ketone salts are now widely used by people with a variety of conditions who are reporting positive responses, including brain fog, memory impairment, sleep problems, low energy, and conditions caused by inflammation (ketones are anti-inflammatory in addition to providing alternative fuel to the brain and other organs). Many people have reported substantial fat loss, especially when combined with a low carb diet and without hunger (ketones can suppress appetite and encourage fat loss by reducing glucose and insulin levels and stimulating fat breakdown). World class athletes and body builders are using ketone salts to enhance physical performance.
A healthy person could take a full serving of Pruvit KetoOS or KetoMax right away. For elderly people or those with chronic medical conditions I recommend getting doctor’s approval so that electrolytes can be monitored and I suggest starting slowly – 1 or 2 teaspoons once or twice a day and increasing gradually over a week or two as tolerated to 1/2 to 1 serving daily, or more as tolerated. Also very important – the person taking the salts needs to be able to drink plenty of fluids to avoid a dehydrating effect of raising ketones.
The KetoOS 2.1 orange dream flavor is the ketone beta-hydroxybutyrate PLUS MCT oil powder with mild oragne flavor and stevia. Works well in hot or cold drink – tea (cold or hot), water or sparkling water. I know someone who doesn’t like it as a drink but puts it into Jello!!
The KetoOS 3.0 chocolate swirl has a light chocolate flavor and contains the ketone betahydroxybutyrate but NO MCT. It does contain certain amino acids that help maintain muscle mass.
The KetoMax is Hawaiian punch flavor and is probably the best at elevating ketone levels the highest. Can be used in cold or hot drinks. It is the more bio-available form of betahydroxybutyrate called the D-form. Also has no MCT. KetoMax will be coming out in a “hot cocoa” flavor soon.
KetoKreme is a combination of coconut and MCT powder (no betahydroxybutyrate) with stevia and cinnamon that you can put into a warm drink like coffee or tea. I use this one myself in the morning in coffee and love it.
The most economical way to buy the ketone salts (Keto//OS) is a 30 day serving supply in a can which comes with a one serving scoop. One scoop contains about 8 level teaspoons of the ketone salt powder, so if someone starts with one or two teaspoons as their serving the can could potentially last quite a bit longer than a month. We live in UK. My husband has stage 5 altzheimer’s. Doctors nearly killed him in August 2017 by ignoring his weight loss, throats clearing & bleeding for 7 months. They said it was Altzheimer’s. it was throat cancer. After his operation he haemorrhaged & we had to wait 4 hours for a team to stop the bleeding. He had blood transfusions, heart stopped & he had to be resuscitated (I had refused to sign a DNR). He was in an induced Coma for 48 hours & my husband went from a stage 2 to stage 4/5. I discovered Ionic Silver, ESIAC herbs & coconut oil. Surgeon said he’d by dead by Christmas ’17 as the tumour had invaded the throat wall. He is still here with me now. January 2019. in October ’17 PET scan showed no signs of cancer. Last year he was urine incontinent & bleeding. Doctor said Altzheimer’s. i acted fast this time & I refused to accept this. It was 2 grade-2 carcenomas. Now removed & no damage done.
But his memory is deteriorating & he can hardly walk. I have been rereading all my Altzheimer’s books by Bruce Fife & started to get more information on Ketones, which led me to you. I will not give up on my dear husband of 40 years. I am 66 & trained in Complementary Medicine many years ago. At the moment I have a good brain & quite a good grasp on the research into alternative help for neuropathic conditions.
(My daughter had a horrendous brain injury when she was 13. She is now 40, a mother of 5, a teacher & deputy head in a secondary school. But she is suffering & her memory is deteriorating. So you can see where my passion lies)
BUT I am confused and a bit concerned about all the products. I have been giving y husband 2-3 tablespoons of raw organic coconut oil every morning. Now I realise it must be more often during the day. OK! I have ordered The Coconut Ketogenic Diet, The Beginner’s Ketogenic Cook Book, & Bulletproof’s Upgraded Octane Oil. Now I read your pages & see that something else is even better.
What am I to do? How much of what do I use? Do I combine them? Etc etc Now totally confused!!!
I feel that you are the best & most uptodate expert in this field.
Please help me get him back. If only for a little while. And maybe I can help my daughter & prevent this terrible condition in myself. Yours most sincerely Renya James

Sorry it took so long to reply! I am so sorry to hear about what you and your husband have been going through. You can combine ketogenic strategies. For example, combining coconut and/or MCT oil with a low carbohydrate diet could provide mild to moderate ketosis. I think of coconut and MCT oil as part of the food in place of some of the other fats and oils and consider ketone salts or ketone esters as optional but possibly helpful supplements to boost ketone levels higher for several hours. My book called The Coconut Oil and Low Carb Solution…” goes into more detail about this, and my newest book coming out February 19, 2019 (https://amzn.to/2AxBcLp) explains combining diet and these other strategies in much more detail. I hope you find some help here for your husband.

For Reyna James, Have you read Dr. Dale Bredesen’s book on Alzheimers? If not, try that from Amazon OR just do some in-depth googling to find the study (I’d look for the actual study which details the patients and their individual protocols) he did at UCLA with Buck Institute of Aging on Alzheimers. Though geared towards Alzheimers/dementia, his protocol is a ‘whole health’ one involveing many aspects…testing for and if needed, administering certain vitamins/supplements, diet is low carb/keto with night time intermittent fasting, and more. Check it out! 9 out of 10 participants in the small 10-person study actually REVERSED their condition!! It has since been used by other doctors for other patients with good success.

Yes, I have read his study and his book. A lot of good information.

I am 67 years old and eight years ago had a parathyroid gland tumor and diagnosed with type 1 diabetes but my pancreas still produces a significant amount of insulin I take :atorvastatin 10mg 1 daily; pioglitazone HCL 30mg 1 daily; chlorthalidone 25mg half daily; ramiphril 10mg 1 daily;metformin ER 500mg 2×2 daily;vit. E 400IU ;slow mag 4 daily;mens multivitamin;vit D3 1000 IU daily; vit.C 1000 mg . 18 units Lantus(insulin) before bed.Can ketone salts help me ?
Mary Newport MD
Hi Charlie,
Yes, there is a good chance ketone salts could help you, but I strongly recommend you involve your doctor before doing so. The blood sugar will often drop after taking a packet of the salts, so you would need to closely monitor that, such as before and after taking it and perhaps hourly for two or three more hours so see how you respond to it, at least the first few times you take it. I suggest you also read my articles on Using Ketone Salts in the Elderly and in People with Medical Conditions and also on Ketone Esters: What, Why and How; the ester could be another option for you. You could print out these articles and take to your doctor since they provide guidance for what to monitor.
I hope this helps!

Oh my goodness. You have been through so much with your husband and daughter. For your husband, it would be good to add more coconut oil throughout the day and also add MCT oil slowly if you are able. You should be able to get MCT oil on Amazon or ask at your pharmacy or health food store if they can get it. It would be good for your daughter to start coconut oil and also some MCT as soon as possible as well to prevent further deterioration and possibly improve. There are diet guidelines with questions and answers under the article section if you have not already found them; there is a list of food ideas to make things easier. That is a good place to start. I think of coconut and MCT oil as part of the food/diet and ketone salts and ketone esters as supplements to boost ketones further. They can be used together. For example, I eat coconut and MCT oil with nearly every meal and take one packet per day of ketone salts or 10 ml of ketone ester as a supplement usually in the afternoon. This is how most people would combine the oils and supplements. Some people take the ketone ester in the morning and a packet of ketone salts in the afternoon. It is possible to get them in the UK by having a US address to forward the product to you. There is a website called globalshopaholics.com that can help with that. If you are thinking about buying ketone salts or ketone ester, you need to be aware of some of the common effects that may need to be monitored by a medical provider, such as blood sugar;, electrolytes and blood pressure; please read the articles on “Using Ketone Salts in the Elderly and People with Medical Conditions” and “Ketone Ester: What, Why and How?” You can email me if you have more questions or need help to get ketone products at my personal email preemiedoctor@aol.com. I hope you find some help for your husband and daughter.

Is the keytone salts bad for someone with liver damage?
Mary Newport MD
It would be best to check with your doctor. Some people use low-carb or ketogenic diet with success who have liver failure or cirrhosis. They feel better. Please also read my article on Using Ketone Salts in the Edlerly and People with Medical Conditions.
